end of the tunnel

"end of the tunnel" presents a selection of artists represented by tokyo’s second generation commercial contemporary art spaces - the “new tokyo contemporaries”. each gallery is relatively young - the oldest space, takefloor, having opened in 2004, yet each is owned and operated by veterans of the primary first generation Tokyo gallery spaces such as Tomio Koyama, Mizuma Gallery, SCAI the Bathhouse,Ota Fine Arts and Taka Ishii Gallery. primarily in their early-to-mid thirties, the gallery owners and artists share a generational point of view and find themselves in a particular moment which is as exciting as it is difficult to define; this is a time of beginning - full of hope and energy as well as possible peril; there is a sense that collectively, the galleries may not only build upon the success of their predecessors but, perhaps work to create an alternative commercial model - a different and more easily accessible way to experience and acquire artworks. just how this is to be done, even its very possibility is uncertain. this group exhibition at the Shin Marunouchi Building represents a tentative yet positive first step. the gallerists hope that you will “enter the tunnel” and participate with them in a joint venture incomplete without the active participation of those curious about the current state of contemporary art in Japan.
